Melbourne experiences platform AmazingCo raised AU$5.1m in a Series A round backed by Aconex co-founders Leigh Jasper and Robert Phillpot. Rampersand VC, Artesian and Macdoch Ventures were also part of the raise.

The Series A follows a $2.3m seed funding round last year, with those investors returning.

AmazingCo has been expanding rapidly in the US over the past six months, launching in 23 cities, with plans to hit 50 cities globally, including London, Paris, and Montreal, by early 2020.

Launched in 2016 by Silvia Hope and Jeremy Cox, the company offers things such as mystery picnics, wine tours, social impact activities and team building events for couples, friends, families and work teams, with more than one million people using the platform, which uses Netflix-like data insights to find the right experiences for people.

AmazingCo has more than tripled its geographic spread and headcount in the past 12 months and the latest cash injection will go towards the continued rapid expansion of both the experience catalogue and geographic reach.

Cox said the growth in the “experience economy” is because people are seeking more experiences instead of things in a “real world connection”.

“We’re excited to be the first to take on the challenge of creating new, unique experiences and then scaling these to cities all over the globe with the help of our technology platform and partners,” he said.

“We’re trying to help people all across the globe spend their time in a more meaningful way and help them create moments of connectivity with people who matter to them, and it’s been incredibly rewarding so far.”

Leigh Jasper believes the startup has the potential to become the world’s largest experiences company

“The kind of growth AmazingCo is experiencing is up there with some of the worlds most dominant tech companies, indicating they are solving a real problem,” he said.

“And they have cracked the US much faster than any of us could have expected. We love companies that bring digital efficiency and scale to an industry that previously has been paper and phone calls, so the opportunity for AmazingCo is very clear to us.”
