AI-based doctor clinical notes taker Heidi Health has raised a further $26.8 million (US$16.6m) to top up its 18-month-old Series A.

The follow-on investment was led by US VC Headline (formerly e.ventures and BV Capital), which sees Heidi as Australia’s next Canva or Atlassian supported by Local Globe, Anthology (Menlo Ventures and Anthropic) .

Existing investors Blackbird, HESTA, Possible Ventures and Archangel Ventures, having backed the initial $10 million Series A in October 2023.

Blackbird led Heidi’s $5 million Seed round.

Dr Thomas Kelly founded Heidi as Oscar in 2021 with former Goldman Sachs analyst Waleed Mussa and former Coles data scientist Yu Liu.

The AI tech transcribes and processes conversations between doctors and patients to produce clinical notes and follow-up materials, from referral letters to assessments, allowing clinicians to work more efficiently and focus more on the patients.

It launched in February 2024, and has now been used in more than 20 million patient interactions, with strong adoption in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and increasingly, the EU.

The funding will be used to expand its capabilities beyond scribing to include creating pre-chart summaries, accessing clinical guidelines for treatments and management pathways, and engaging with patients outside the clinic.

Dr Kelly, a former vascular surgical resident, and Heidi’s CEO, said clinicians are overwhelmed by an unsustainable administrative workload.

“This destroys their wellbeing and drains away job satisfaction, resulting in an exodus of talented clinicians from the workforce – further reducing the capacity of our already frail healthcare systems,” he said.

“That’s why I founded Heidi – to free doctors from non-clinical work so they can focus on their patients and enjoy fulfilling careers in medicine.”

Headline partner Taylor Brandt said Heidi’s approach to the medical scribe market is truly differentiated.

“What sets Heidi apart are their bold choices: prioritising customisation over complex integrations, their global-first strategy, and building a product-led motion out of Australia that rivals tech giants like Canva and Atlassian,” he said.

“In just one year, they’re already facilitating one million consultations weekly across five countries which far outstrips other AI scribe offerings—an extraordinary testament to how perfectly they’ve addressed clinicians’ needs.”
