A Wollongong-based startup helping Australia’s energy transition with a faster, cheaper way to produce hydrogen, has topped the nominations list for the 2023 Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards, with three finalist nominations.
Hysata, founded in 2021, has designed a new kind of electrolyser, the component used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen that is a critical technology in green hydrogen production.
The company is a finalist in the Startup of the Year, as well as the Best Sustainability Startup category, as well as a finalist in Most Innovative Startup.
Nearly 250 entries across the 10 categories, which also includes Scaleup of the Year, Best Technical Leader, Best Startup Culture and Best New Founder.
Startup Daily editor Simon Thomsen said the judging panels were impressed by the quality and breadth of the entries and it was a challenge to choose just 3 finalists.
“Most Innovative Startup was the most popular category, with more than 40 entries, and many of the judges commented on just how good the entries and ideas were, hoping they could add more finalists,” he said.
“The standard shows just how vibrant and diverse the Australian and New Zealand startup ecosystem is and the process gave me some insight into the challenge venture capital investors face in having to choose who they back.”
Alongside SBE Australia’s Nicole Cook and LaunchVic’s Dr Kate Cornick are finalists in the Change Champion category, the judges also selected apiarist and environmentalist Ben Moore from Ben’s Bees in Victoria as someone who embodies making a difference.
“Even though I see plenty of startups and founders editing the site and on the Startup Daily show, it’s great to see these awards unearth others who also deserve recognition,” Thomsen said.
The winners of the 2023 Startup Daily Best in Tech Awards will be announced at a gala dinner in Sydney on September 6.
Tickets for the event, at the Establishment Ballroom, are on sale now through the social impact startup Humanitix.
