Melbourne lockdown ends from midnight tonight – but some restrictions still apply

Acting Victorian Premier James Merlino announced an end to Victoria’s current lockdown from 11:59pm Thursday 10 June 2021.

However, in an effort to control the recent outbreak, visitors to homes will remain banned in Melbourne. While Melbournians will only be able to travel up to 25 km from their home.

Some good news for retailers

With lockdown ending, restrictions will ease in the Greater Melbourne area. Restaurants and cafes can reopen for seated service with up to 100 people per venue and a maximum of 50 inside. Retail can reopen in line with density limits of one person per four square metres. While beauty therapists can also resume service for treatments where masks can be worn.

Merlino said under the new restrictions, offices will be able to reopen. However, staff numbers will be capped at 25. Nonetheless, the Acting Premier urged people to continue to work from home where possible.

No more lockdown, no more masks outdoors

Victorians will also be able to breathe more freely, with an end to mandatory masks outdoors. Masks will still remain compulsory indoors. Funeral services will be able to resume with a cap of 50 people, Weddings can continue but at reduced numbers- with a maximum of 10 in attendance. Religious ceremonies will also be capped at 50 people if the gathering is indoors (density limits apply).

Restrictions eased further for regional Victorians

Victorians outside of Greater Melbourne will have restrictions eased further. In regional Victoria, when lockdown end on Thursday night home visits will be reinstated. From 1159pm  June 10, two adults per plus their dependents will be able to visit a home per day. Public gatherings have also increased to a maximum of 20 people.

Restaurants and cafes can open to a max of 150 per venue for seated service, with up to 75 allowed indoors.

Religious services will be capped at 150 for a venue, with no more than 75 people allowed indoors. While funerals will be limited to 75 people and weddings 20.

Community sport is back for all ages for both training and competition in regional Victoria.

Melbournians are still banned from travelling to regional and rural areas – but regional Victorians are permitted to travel within the state.
