StartGiving, the not-for-profit organisation founded by tech investor Daniel Petre in 2022, is embarking on a new project in its mission to inspire a culture of giving in the tech community.

Following last year’s podcast series featuring Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Canva cofounder Cliff Obrecht, StartGiving is partnering with academics from the Centre for Social Impact on a research project to understand personal giving in the tech sector better.

The study is a nationwide survey, running for September, plus one-on-one interviews with founders on their attitudes to and relationship with giving.

The survey is seeking responses from founders, tech investors, operators, intermediaries, early employees of startups, or other executive leaders.

Petre said the final research will be published publicly.

“In the US, resources like the Forbes Philanthropy Score give us partial insight into how some tech founders give,” he said.

“The Australian tech sector generates unprecedented levels of wealth, but no specialised data looks at personal giving in this community. We want to develop a nuanced analysis of the state and potential for personal giving in tech.”

Petre said they plan to use this data to inform the conversation and help inspire more successful founders, execs and VCs to give, ultimately generating millions more in new funding for charity,

“If you work in tech or in an organisation that supports the tech sector, please tell us what you think about giving in our short survey and help us to have even more impact,” he said

StartGiving uses their knowledge and networks to concierge founders and execs through the process of starting or scaling their personal giving, connecting them to ideas, specialists and like-minded peers.

The team, led by philanthropy expert Antonia Ruffell, has expertise in managing the complexities around foundation establishment, donating equity and dealing with third-party regulators.

StartGiving covers the upfront costs of establishing giving structures for tech founders and is agnostic about where they choose to donate their money.

Petre fully funds StartGiving’s services to ensure they’re free.
