Gen George is pretty bloody awesome, she is young but has the focus of someone that has been in the game a very long time. What I think impressed me most about this interview was how on top of everything she is when it comes to her business One Shift. Her understanding of the industry and trends is impressive, calculated and very eye opening. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did filming it.
In our new founders series video series looks at those behind the successful startups in Australia. This candid ongoing series is hosted by Andy Minh Trieu. Today we talk to the founder of StyleRocks.com, Pascale Helyar-Moray about tech, e-commerce and jewellery.
He was three from the front of a line about to enrol into University down in Tasmania when he got the phone call that ADFA were taking more students on and were offering him a place in the Navy. Three days later he was in Canberra thrown into a highly disciplined environment, being yelled out with gun in hand and studying how to engineer weapons to protect our nation. From being one of the youngest people ever to oversea the creation of new massive warships for Australia, to building and selling his first tech venture before he left the navy, Sebastien Eckersley-Maslin has a story that is both both entertaining and inspiring.
Sport and competition always made him anxious at school, in high school he made his mother write him notes to get out of PE. From passionately hating sport in his teen years to becoming a leader in the fitness space by the age of 23, Brisbane based entrepreneur Jack East set about changing the way health and fitness was taught to children resulting in an exciting venture that now has the biggest gym chains in the country frothing at the mouth for a piece of the action.
In every industry there are people that DO care about their clients and those that only care about the money they are getting from the clients and not protecting the brand of those clients. I have personally seen agencies deliberately not go above and beyond for their clients because of laziness and fail to add value when it is offered by publishers, likewise when it comes to a few people in PR I have personally received press releases and pitches that do not suit our publications readership and their clients target market.
When you think of the Lean Startup philosophy, you mind is not immediately drawn to thinking of a bricks and mortar store in the hospitality industry, but for founders of Mooberry [real froyo and smoothies] John and Janine Nguyen who have just opened up their first store in Newtown [Sydney] it was all about applying these philosophies outside the tech space.
Pascale Helyar – Moray is the founder of StyleRocks, an online startup that allows people to create their own pieces of jewellery. With over 3 trillion combinations this self confessed jewellery addict prides herself on having something for everyone. It has been a year since this working mother and emerging female leader in the tech space first launched her venture and it is fast becoming a darling of the press both in Australia and overseas.
Oscar Martin and Chris Wirasinha are fast becoming two of the most influential figures in the Australian media landscape. Their meeting at digital agency Universal Maccan almost 10 years ago now, back in their early twenties instigated plans for the pair to write and produce their own television show. As the idea pivoted and research was done around the subject, they decided to do something that back in the early 2000’s was a pretty new concept – produce a free DVD magazine.
Chris Ball is the founder of Sydney based startup Adventure Honey. A love for adventure and in particular Thailand led him to create an interactive media platform bringing together likeminded travellers from around the world to share awesome travel experiences. Partnering with Bluechilli, Ball has essentially taken the backpacker bar from your holidays and put it online.
Priyanka Rao is the founder of Evolvex, the next generation of furniture design and creation. Although she may have three degrees under her belt, her path was decided early as being from a family of entrepreneurs it only seemed natural that Rao would journey down this path herself.
