Mental health and the Australian startup ecosystem

- November 29, 2017 < 1 MIN READ

Recent studies show that 49% of startup founders suffer from mental health issues. Given the size of that number it is concerning that as a startup ecosystem we don’t talk about mental health and its impact on our personal lives, our teams and our company’s as often as we should.

Launching a startup is not easy and the impact it can have on ones mental state is something we collectively need to talk about as an ecosystem more often.

Earlier this year the New South Wales Government launched its RESOLVE program targeting a wide demographic of individuals that are at risk of suffering from mental health issues.

This coming Thursday Fishburners will be holding an event in partnership with the RESOLVE initiative with proceeds being donated to Beyond Blue.

The panel event will see the following people from the Australian startup ecosystem sharing their experiences with mental health :

  • Allen LIAO | Founder, Tzukuri
  • Daniel PETRE | Founder, AirTree Ventures
  • Taryn WILLIAMS | Founder, The Right Fit
  • Jay SPENCE | Founder, Uprise
  • Rachel SERVICE | Founder, Happiness Concierge
  • Clem Harson | beyondblue speaker

Sharing experiences is an important step in removing the stigma around mental health that still exists in society, particularly in an industry like ours obsessed with praising unhealthy habits like not sleeping and focusing on vanity metrics as a measure of success above other more important things.

The event is a $7.00 donation and tickets can be purchased here : eventbrite.com.au/e/resolve-mental-strength-in-uncertainty-tickets
