Up until now, electric car manufacturer Polestar has typically displayed the mannered sensibilities of its Volvo heritage, right up to the SUV coupe Polestar 4.

But as the company moves out of its Swedish home (Chinese-owned Volvo is keeping an 18% stake while dad, Geely, takes majority control) Polestar is looking to swap sensible for racy, announcing a concept roadster at England’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Polestar Concept BST will be their sixth car, alongside the Polestar 2 fastback, launched in 2019, the Polestar 3, which lobbed about 18 months ago, and most recently landing here, the equally imaginatively named Polestar 4 crossover.

Also on the drawing board is the Polestar 5, an electric 4-door GT, and Polestar 6 roadster, first revealed in 2022, and due on the road by 2026.

Here’s how the company announced their latest idea: “The Polestar Concept BST features bespoke bodywork, finished in a classic motorsport silver, with muscular flared arches, extra wide track and 22-inch forged alloy wheels. An aerodynamically optimised bonnet, with its unique vented design, is framed by an aggressive front splitter. The motorsport theme continues at the rear with an extreme rear wing and a design completed by the bespoke racing-livery inspired graphics.”

While Musk is trying to put lipstick on a Hummer with Cybertruck, it’s now 16 years since Tesla first arrived with a roadster (the only car in space) and the Tesla Model S Plaid is more at the Colin from accounts end of raciness.

But plenty of others are playing in the space with the good looks to match the speed and handling, especially Porsche with the Taycan and its Sport Turismo cousin, the Taycan. The Polestar 4 is widely seen as a response to the Porsche Macan EV.

Looking at the Polestar Concept BST, it’s giving off big 911 vibes. The more angular Lamborghini-esque lines of the original 6 concept have been softened for more sweeping curves reminiscent of Polestar’s Germanic rival.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath, channelled in his inner-Nigel Tufnel to sing the praises of the new Concept BTS, saying: “This car is a demonstration of how far we can push our performance brand – Polestar turned up to 11, if you will – and a demonstration of how we could apply the BST formula to our line-up in the future.”

There are no details around price yet – probably around a 10th of the cost of a Paninfarina Battista – but there’s talk of 1000hp and a sub-3 second 0-100kmh, in a souped up version of the 884 hp and 3.2 sec 0-100 for the Polestar 6, alongside a 250kmh top speed to get you around a Westfield carpark in record time.
