Flinders University’s New Venture Institute and Majoran coworking space are calling on Adelaide startups and entrepreneurs to apply to the second intake of their pre-accelerator program, Venture Dorm by MEGA.
The intensive 12 week program, due to begin in early August, aims to help individuals and startups develop a business concept. Each startup will be assigned a dedicated mentor to work with individually, with mentors also leading workshops on market research and analysis, idea generation and evaluation, developing a business proposal, and pitching to investors.
Participants will be given the opportunity to work from Majoran, with teams encouraged to commit to working on their ideas on a full time basis for the duration of the program.
Newly appointed Majoran managing director Aainaa Rahman said the program aims to equip people with skills that will help them meet the oncoming changes of a challenging work environment.
“It creates a platform open to collaboration and encourages applicants of all kinds including individuals looking to use their skill sets to help create new products, to an employer eager to learn startup techniques to fast track development,” Rahman said.
The program, which is sponsored by the South Australian government, is the result of a partnership between Majoran and Flinders University entered into this year. It saw the merging of Majoran’s MEGA program with the university’s Venture Dorm course to create Australia’s largest pre-accelerator program.
Over 100 companies and over 300 people have participated across the two programs over the last few years, with graduates having gone on to raise combined capital of more than $10 million.
Graduates of the program include Will Tamblyn, founder of holographic projection startup Voxon.
“We signed up to Venture Dorm to work on our business model, to test our market theories and to form new connections. We had no idea how many doors it would open. Venture Dorm is much more than a collection of classes; it opens up an entire network of amazing mentors and contacts,” he said.
Awards to be handed out at the program’s pitch day will be given the opportunity to pitch at Adelaide’s SouthStart event, and a trip to the SXSW festival in Texas next year.
