Bigcommerce enlists big talent to help steer $4 billion in online sales

E-commerce giant Bigcommerce has just announced the recruitment of three senior figures in San Francisco to help drive the company’s exponential growth across the globe – in the past year, the company has seen 100 percent year-over-year revenue growth, increased the number of online stores from 35,000 to 55,000, and is approaching $4 billion in total online sales across merchants.

The company’s two Australian founders Eddie Machaalani and Mitchell Harper, are constantly covering their technical bases with the best talent to ensure that Bigcommerce’s services are not only diverse and competitive across the changing e-commerce sector, but also reliable. To achieve this goal, Steve Corona has been signed on as the new Principal Architect; Scott Baker is now Head of Site Reliability and Operations; and Kei Tang acts as the Head of Quality Engineering.

Steve Corona is the former CTO of TwitPic, a service which he helped become one of the most heavily used independent services for sharing images on Twitter, with over 50 million users and 4 billion photos. More recently, Corona was head of platform at Life360, where he architected the core APIs that serve as the backbone of the service.

Scott Baker joins Bigcommerce as head of Site Reliability and Operations. He was recently the director of Systems Engineering and Operations at Eventbrite, where he was responsible for taking the site to 99.99 percent availability, during a time when the company announced it had processed $2 billion in gross ticket sales.

Kei Tang spent seven years at Salesforce where he was Director of Quality Engineering charged with scaling SaaS/PaaS services from being able to handle millions of transactions a day to over one billion per day. He also handled the delivery of Salesforce’s Analytics real-time reporting and dashboard features on sales, service, custom apps, and third-party data during a period where the company grew from almost $500 million to over $3 billion in revenue.

In a recent interview with Startup Daily, Bigcommerce co-founder Mitchell Harper revealed that “2013 was a very strong year for us in terms of growth. We grew at over 100% and, most importantly, helped thousands of businesses around the world grow faster. This year we’re ramping up our engineering efforts and expecting to accelerate even faster, we’re hiring a killer leadership team, opening an office in downtown San Francisco and filling it with amazing local talent.”

If this round of hiring is any indication for the future, Harper and Machaalani’s plans on building consumer-friendly software for scaling small and successful online businesses should see them taking on commerce and online retail giant Amazon in no time.
