A first of its kind for Australia, IconPark is being hailed as the first crowdfunding platform and real estate fund dedicated to the bar and restaurant sector.
Behind the venture is Dean McEvoy (Founder of Spreets) and Paul Schell (Founder of Hospitality Superstar Designer) who are currently preparing for the launch of their first project located on Stanley Street in East Sydney in nine days time.
Put simply, the business works like this: people submit ideas and concepts for their hospitality dream to IconPark; this is then placed on the crowdfunding platform and the crowd chooses the best idea.
Then with the help of IconPark, the winner gets an approved, licensed, customisable, fitted out and ready-to-trade location for a three-month season. And, of course, all of this is fully funded.
I am really liking the vibe of this new startup – it’s a dual tech and offline play which is nice to see. What is very cool is the fact that the founders are focused on helping real people realise their food dreams based on what people want, and are including the support structures and mentoring that is needed to make it successful.
This is a stark contrast to prize money for food dreams that are dished out across commercial television these days, where we see people with no vision pouring money down the drain because they lack the support network they need to keep them in a successful headspace.
I am looking forward to having a bevvy and seeing the urban delights that are going to start popping up as a result of this one around Sydney and hopefully across other states and territories as well.
