Startup Weekend Adelaide [#StartupADL] is a 54-hour learning marathon in which young entrepreneurs focus on finding “the next big thing” in web or mobile application that could form the basis of a viable business.
Running July 12-14, more than 80 entrepreneurs, software developers, graphics designers and business people will converge on Adelaide University’s Hub Central to pitch their idea in the hope of developing a breakthrough business.
Startup Weekend Adelaide aims to help put Adelaide on the map as a global hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Next month’s event is the third to be held in Adelaide. At last year’s event Adelaide ranked number six out 133 cities in the Global Startup Battle. Previous Startup Weekends have seen successful local startups such as Encyclopedia of Magic, TheUniCoach, Data Munch and FitUsIn.
Startup Weekend Adelaide is supported by tech heavyweights Google Australia and Internode as well as Adelaide City Council, Piper Alderman, BDO and an array of local entrepreneurial organisations.
Event Manager Samantha Lang has volunteered for all three events. “Without a doubt, I can say Startup Weekend is the best way for budding entrepreneurs to test their idea, before they take it to market.” she said.
Vinh Giang, cofounder of winning team Encyclopedia of Magic, described Startup Weekend Adelaide as “One of the best things you will do.”
A team of world class mentors, speakers and pitch judges with backgrounds in entrepreneurship and venture capital will take part in the weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday, teams use Lean Startup Methodology for validating their ideas and building a Minimal Viable Product. Sunday Night sees final idea presentations and the awarding of prizes to the winning teams based on viable business models, customer validation and idea execution. Approximately 10 per cent of startups at previous events have received funding after one year. Those interested can sign up through the Startup Weekend Adelaide website.
