Over the past 1 year and 9 months, Shoe String has grown to be a well respected resource of news and opinions around the startup and small business space. Through this, we organically and without intention have formed great working relationships throughout the mainstream media who regularly contact us for introductions to startups, specific types of businesses or people of a certain profile for stories they are working on. This is something we are happy and love to do, after all getting more startups into the media was the reason we started this gig in the first place.
One of the big issues though where we often see startups fail, is through a scattered, naive approach when it comes to pitching to media. We also have seen many come undone when talking to media on radio, television and in interviews. This type of stuff can quite often cut you off from future opportunities which is not something a small business or startup needs.
Our founder Mat Beeche, is looking at running a series of weekend workshops, for small groups of no more than 15 businesses at a time all around How to connect and Build Relationships with the media. This is not a theoretical workshop, it is a one day 8 hour intensive that is designed to break a part your business, discover the newsworthy stories and re-package them in a way that delivers a sound and interesting story to the mainstream media. It will look at who you SHOULD be targeting and why people in that demographic will be interested in talking to you.
We look at the journalists, producers, bloggers, publishers etc that you should be connected to and make you make that happen.
It will also go through you interview skills, your pitch and how to find the RIGHT people to talk to within media organisations. This is not one of those one day workshops where you walk away feeling motivated and then don’t do anything, at the end of it you WILL be pitching to media and getting yourself media coverage, we will help you connect with the right people, and you will be expected to bring home the goods with all you have learnt.
So if you are keen on trading an upcoming weekend for an intensive, focused and exhausting weekend with homework and connections in the media. Express your interest below and a member of the team will be in contact.
