Event: Responsive Design vs Designing for Context

Responsive digital design has become the trendy design request. Building all your sites (mobile, tablet and desktop) off the same code base can be great for efficiency, but it also can blind a product team to game-changing business opportunities. Mobile has a context that your laptop doesn’t: it could be with you in a store, as you commute, and on your couch. In this class you will learn how to design for context and provide users with a continuous experience no matter where they are or what device they are using.

This class is geared toward digital designers, Start-Ups, product owners or channel owners tasked with creating omni-channel digital solutions.

In this class students will learn:

  • What is responsive design, when to use it, and how to design with it in mind
  • Designing for mobile: “Think” don’t “Shrink”
  • The fundamentals of context-driven design and how it changes your feature set and your product
  • 5 ways to tell whether a site should be one-size-fits-all responsive or unique in each channel
  • How to map continious experiences for your product

Prerequisites: Students should have some experience with digital planning and design.

Required class materials / software: Laptop that can access WiFi

Henry Cho is a veteran User Experience professional with over 16 years experience including 10 years in mobile UX. He is constantly striving to deliver products to users that are not just innovative in the way they solve your problems, but that will surprise and delight you along the way. He believes we should be moving far beyond “usability” as UX practitioners and we should be designing for delight, persuasion, and utilising the psychology of game design. He is a firm believer in the Lean Start up methodology and Lean UX practice. Since graduating from Startmate (Australia’s Y-Combinator) he has been working as a UX coach for a number of Australian Startups as well as championing the adoption of Lean UX at an enterprise level, most recently within Westpac and ANZ. Not content to simply preach, he is currently the co-founder of IRL Gaming which beat 200 companies for a place in the Australian Incubator fund Startmates (Australian version of Y-Combinator).
