Generating traffic to your online store

The internet has changed the way that the world works, and everything from communication to shopping has been influenced by the internet. A successful business today has to have a good web presence, and that includes having a great online store that offers customers access to all the goods and services a business can provide. But building a great website is only the first step – you still have to get people to visit it.

There are a lot of different ways to go about sending traffic to an online store, and a lot of misunderstood things as well. Instead of sitting in front of the computer, watching your Google analytics and crossing your fingers for the traffic to increase organically, you can take a few simple steps to get it happening quicker. Here are some of the ways to go about boosting website traffic to your online store.

Good name and good domain name

For starters, be sure you have a good name and a good domain name. People are much more likely to remember SportsProducts.com.au than they are SamsSportsSuppliesAndProducts.com.au. Additionally, your domain name will influence search engine results, so name it wisely.

With that in mind, it’s not a bad idea to consider search engine optimisation. You can either hire a company to handle this for you or try to learn a bit about it on your own. In most cases, hiring the pros will get you better search results but will cost more. Doing it yourself may increase result placement to a point. Either way, pay attention to where you are in a search engine.

A blog is a good idea, too. Be sure to update it on a regular basis. Blogs can boost your search engine ranks and attract a serious following. Simply put, spending a few minutes weekly crafting a good blog entry will help you get noticed.

Social media marketing

Social media marketing is a must. Even major companies rely on Facebook and Twitter to engage customers and get their attention. You can run contests, announce specials, and more with ease. And social media sites make it easy to direct customers back to your main website and online store.

Direct marketing

Direct marketing is another option. Things like SMS or Email marketing are still highly effective when done properly. Instead of sending out blanket messages, you’ll want to target specific niche markets in order to succeed. It’s also an inexpensive way to get results.

Google Adwords

Google Adwords is essential for a new store to get found on a Google search. There are a few good articles out there covering how to set up a Google ad correctly, once again like the SEO, this is something you should probably engage an expert on to ensure you don’t pay for unrelated keywords.

Marketing campaign

Finally, you can go the old-fashioned route and spend a bit of cash on a marketing campaign. From large banner ads on major websites to a billboard ad with your domain name on it, sometimes just running a good advertisement can help get you attention. Look at forming strategic alliances with other businesses in your industry that are not direct competitors. An example of this is if you have a baby clothing store, approach well known ‘mummy bloggers’ about advertising on their website.
