A “Same Same BUT Different” type of events hits the Sydney Startup scene next weekend as Social Startup 48 plans to have their ver first event. When describing what Social Entrepreneurship is, the organisation says “Social entrepreneurs are individuals who devise innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change”.
In much the same setup and framework as traditional Startup Weekend events, participants will have 48 hours to build a business from scratch and then present these on the Sunday afternoon at the end of the weekend to a panel of Experts.
Here is the Agenda for the Weekend:
Prior to the commencement of the 48 hour run, we’ll kick things off with food and drinks, and introductions.
Once your team has formed up in person, you will be expected to build upon your basic idea. Nominate a cause and a name for your enterprise, and then select a basic business model you will flush out over the course of the weekend.
Friday night will end with drinks at a nearby bar, where you can continue getting to know your teammates while continuing collaborating over a drink (or three).
Rise and shine! Saturday is the day where you are expected to make big advancements with your newly formed business. The ideas that you discussed the night before become real as you being to build your products, design your services and create your website. Successful established social entrepreneurs and philanthropists will also share their wealth of knowledge as they deliver presentations and provide mentoring advice directly to your team.
While you continue to work on your enterprise, each team will participate in an additional 24-hour mini-fundraising competition to raise money for charity and increase awareness of current challenges around raising funds for social sector organisations.
The day ends the same way as Friday, at a nearby bar… or wherever your own team chooses to find its inspiration.
On Sunday, you will be working hard to have the real essentials in place, including your business plan, marketing strategy and funding strategy. Depending on your enterprise, you may even have a working product by now.
At the end of the 48 hours, your team will pitch your social enterprise to a panel of philanthropists and social entrepreneurs. You will be judged on various criteria including creativity, the need for your enterprise in the community and the quality of your team’s work. This is your opportunity to impress the panel and perhaps even interest some of them to invest in your team’s social enterprise.
After the 48 hours are over, you will have had a fantastic amount of fun, worked incredibly hard… and will have a real business model in your back pocket, ready to make real waves. What more could you want?
