Startup Treadley plans US expansion

Two years ago Lisa Heggie could not find a sun protection product for her family to wear while riding their bikes and wearing their helmets. On researching the market, Lisa discovered that a ‘hat’ did not exist and she started the process of designing a cover to fit over a bike helmet to provide sun protection.

Treadley Helmet Hats launched to the market in August 2010. We have 70 retailers across Australia including the Australian Cancer Council, Bambini Pronto, GoldCross Cycles, independent stores; and our own e-shop. The business is owned and managed by Lisa– who wears all the business ‘hats’ including designer, accountant, sales manager, logistics and business development. Lisa’s background in marketing enabled her to see the domestic and international potential for the product and her excitement at developing and launching a new product drove her to get the product to market and preserver with the challenges of making it work.

Treadley Helmet Hats have filled a large void in the personal sun protection market and our sales for summer 2010 and summer 2011 have been strong despite adverse weather conditions in 2010 and a depressed retail market. The product has been well received by the cycling and sun protection industry, the press and customers as a fun, well designed and affordably priced product that considers the safety parameters of being a ‘cycling accessory’ .

“The range of products for our second season shifted in focus from children to adult styles. This completed our initial objective of offering a product for all age groups and saw a rapid increase in revenue and profitability. Launching our own e-shop increased our margin and accessibility of the product for the public. Goals for 2012 include expanding domestic market options, releasing a new product and launching into the USA” says founder Heggie.
