Urban Rec Australia, a social sports league for adults, launched this week, offering Sydney-siders a casual, social sports league where scoring goals isn’t the only way to win.

Sydney, NSW November 9 2011 – Urban Rec Australia, whose tagline ‘Active. Social. Fun’ spells it out, is now taking registrations for summer. Games are played across Sydney with an emphasis on getting outside, getting healthy and making a few new friends.

League founder Madeleine Wilkie saw a gap in the sports participation market. “Sports leagues can be very competitive and a large time commitment, as well as being expensive,” she found when looking for options to keep active after the office. “I wanted something casual where I could make some friends and go for a beer afterwards.” And when she couldn’t find quite the outlet, she started it.

Urban Rec Australia is currently offering Beach Volleyball, Dodgeball, Touch Football and soccer as well as getting teams together for ad hoc events like the upcoming Valley Stampede, a muddy obstacle course in the Hunter Valley. As demand increases other sports will be added with an emphasis on what the players want. The general age range of players is 18-40 but anyone with a good attitude and a bit of energy is welcome to join.

Teams are scored by their opponents not only on goals scored or games won but also on how fun and sportsmanlike the team was during competition. “The idea is to keep it light,” says Madeleine. “We work hard all day; we’re out here in the evening for a bit of fun and to meet some new people.”

And that’s why she’s planning the evenings to wind up with a bite to eat in a local pub. Games are being played in Manly, and Glebe and the league is still on the lookout for pub sponsors for after- game refreshments.

“This summer is our first season so we’ll play it by ear. It’s all about getting fit and having a laugh,” says Madeleine and by the relaxed look of her and her team, it’s working so far.
