Duckprint, a new online bedding start-up launched by entrepreneur Joey Thomas, is the latest new company to help bring the economic benefits created by internet back to Australia.
Bricks-and-mortar bedding retail outlets are struggling to compete with international websites and shoppers are sending $4.2 billion each year overseas, depriving the Australian economy of income. To combat this, Ms Thomas decided to create her Melbourne-based online doona cover business. “Online businesses have proven time and time again that they can deliver great products at low prices in a way that’s quick and easy for the customer,” says Ms Thomas.
“Most Australians want to support local businesses, but the sad thing is that often Australians have to turn to overseas websites to find what they want. It’s my goal to turn that around.”
After studying marketing and psychology in Melbourne, Joey worked in the homewares and furniture industry before deciding to strike out on her own. “I’ve always had a passion for design and, coming from a family of entrepreneurs, I’ve always wanted to start my own business,” says Joey.
There is a number of foreign websites out there offering bed linen, but Joey just didn’t think they were up to scratch.“I just felt that there wasn’t anyone out there that really catered to Australians’ needs. Most of these sites have long waits, expensive shipping, no customer support, and boring designs.”
Dismayed at the lack of variety and quality available in bedding, Joey began her journey to bring out a range of bedspreads that were not just high quality, but also had interesting designs at a reasonable price.
“My room’s always been my sanctuary, so I’ve always been disappointed with the dull doona covers and dodgy fabrics on offer.”After months of negotiations with various suppliers, and being burned by low quality stock from an unscrupulous producer, Joey is now really proud of the doona covers and other products that Duckprint offers.
“It was a lot of hard work, but now we’ve got a bedding range with interesting designs, great quality, and affordable prices,” says Joey.
Duckprint offers free shipping for its bed linen to everywhere in Australia, whether it be to outback Western Australia, or central Sydney. The delivery time of 1 to 5 working days is also far quicker than most international websites, which can take weeks for packages to arrive, and often don’t explain that their products don’t fit Australian bed sizes.
“One thing that was really important to me was having great customer service. I want all my customers to be able to contact me personally so I can resolve any issues on the spot. That’s just not something that most online businesses offer,” says Joey.
“I believe that Duckprint has great bedding products and provides great service, but I’m really proud of the fact that I’ve been able to give back to the local community. We now employ a number of staff in our Melbourne office, so you can buy from us and know that you’re supporting your fellow Australians.”
