Focus on the Core

“People often forget that Google started as a search engine” were Scott Gerber’s words when I spoke with him in New York recently about his book Never Get A Real Job. Never Get A Real Job is an open and honest look at what being an entrepreneur is like while also providing some practical advice, tips and maybe even a few secrets about how to be successful.

Gerber takes you on a journey of experience through his book and to give you an example of the sometimes brutally honest words chapter one is titled Everyone Poops. Yours Isn’t Special. In true Gerber openness he shares how at times he had 40k in credit card debt, he talks about the company that shalt not be named, Gerber’s first start-up that he himself calls nothing short of a disaster.

Gerber translates his experiences in to a must read book. Gerber’s advice includes focusing on the core of the business, getting that right, delighting your customers and working out how to scale that up before you look to diversify. Despite Gerber’s being a Gerber himself is a serial entrepreneur, internationally syndicated columnist and and the founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council. In his book he explains about the importance of unwavering focus and how to scale the core. Once you have built a sustainable and scalable core business that is the time to consider diversification, add on products and what have you, but Geber is quick to remind me that you should never lose sight of the core offering.

Unlike many guru business books Gerber not only provides insights based on experience but shares with you how he has overcome some common challenges, what service providers he has tried and what did and didn’t worked.

I asked Gerber if he felt that the millennial generation had a sense of entitlement and while he thinks the mantra of work hard, get good grades, study, etc exists he also felt that the millennial generation is humanising everything much more than past generations and waking up and realising that today is the day where you must cease every opportunity.

In what was a refreshingly open and honest interview in closing I asked Gerber what keeps him going when things go wrong and his response, “I think of what having a real job would be like.”
