Johanna Baker-Dowdell, founder of Strawberry Communications, carefully crafts public relation strategies, generating great publicity, for small and medium business owners run by mums.

Johanna decided to take the risk on running the business from home after having her first child, but she didn’t think, at first, she could juggle motherhood and a business at the same time.

“I thought about it several times and how it may look professional or be easier for me to separate work from home but I didn’t know if a home based business would be successful,” she admits. “But I’ve always come back to home as it gives me flexibility with the kids” she added.

It was a risk she was happy she made as Strawberry Communications grew by word of mouth, generating more income than she previously made. “I work harder than I ever did too,” she laughs.

Strawberry Communications cost her just over $1200 from the website design, logo creation to registering her business name. For Johanna, it was money well spent because in no time, she made that and more.

As her business grew, so did the need for extra hands of help. Johanna decided to hire a virtual assistant and a virtual bookkeeper. Both assistants also work from home.

“It got to a point where I really needed assistance” she says. I handed key duties, which they handle and help me keep track of things. “There are things that others are just better at than I am,” she added.
