Ducks in a Row

- May 22, 2011 2 MIN READ

A chance meeting on the mornington peninsula followed by a planned trip to the Australian Alternative Varieities wine show in Mildura created Ducks in a Row Winemakers. Glenn James, one of Australia’s most talented winemakers and Amanda Pritchard, a writer and PR manager in the wine industry met in 2008 over a glass of pinot grigio at T’Gallant winery.

Six months later they were engaged and tasting vermentino, fiano, graciano, sangiovese and many more “alternative” wine varieties in

Mildura at the annual wine show that is all about the future of Australian wine.

Inspired and excited, the pair resolved to create their own wines that would be only “alternative” or at the least, a little different! In

July 2010 they launched their first wine “Erect Habit” Mataro and propelled their quirky, “fringe” wine label into the wine community.

In September 2010 they released their first vermentino and fiano.

During vintage 2011 (the first official Ducks in a Row vintage) they have added a graciano tempranillo blend and one of the first ever nero d’avola’s in Australia to the mix. And let’s not forget the too cool amphora blend that is bubbling away – but that is another story entirely. Ducks in a Row is about increasing the many colours that pepper your wine palate/palette. Renowned artist and cultural icon Mirka Mora created our wine label and a bit of magic, we think.

Their business is virtual. The philosophy is “no borders” and their commitment is to make wines that people may have never heard of that are, first and foremost, really good to drink!

They hope that people will join them on our winemaking odyssey. It’s been a leap of faith and so far, so good.
