As soon as one of those “List” issues of BRW come out, I find myself rushing to the newsagents to buy a copy and flick through the pages and see who made it that year. These particular issues of the magazine to me have always been like a form of entrepreneurial crack, in much the same way the September issue of Vogue would be to an emerging fashionista.
We all love to dream, and a lot of entrepreneurs can often make the mistake of making their journey all about getting rich, and forget about the reason’s behind why they invented their product or service. Don’t get me wrong, you need to dream – without dreamers those inventions that change lives and industries would not exist, but you need to ensure that you don’t get stuck in the dreamers phase forever. Execution is the key to bringing dreams into reality.
Personally it was my dream for years, even up until very recently to be on the Young Rich List. Although a big dream it was completely incongruent with the activities I was doing. So now I have set smaller goals for myself, things that are measurable that I can achieve within a certain timeframe.
My goal now is that I want to build Shoe String into a leader in profiling Australian startups, be a leader in recruitment for startup / small business: sales and support staff, and have it become profitable by the end of November 2011. And most importantly, the big goal is for me and my team to have fun while we are doing this.
Sure being on the Rich List would be great, but I think that as long as I can pay my bills, buy a nice place and go on a great holiday each year, and being able to live comfortably whilst building a respected brand, I think I will be a very happy man.
