Since its inception, the Pause Fest experience of bringing together a new breed of thinkers across the creative, technology and entrepreneurship sectors has attracted major event sponsors and supporters. This year, Australia Post is partnering with Pause Fest 2016 to support innovation, creativity, and online business / ecommerce – themes that are visited throughout various events within the festival.

Australia Post plays a unique role when it comes to supporting small business, simply because of who they are and what they do. The organisation has a very clear strategy ahead to focus on helping businesses go and grow online – by making it easy to send, collect, and return parcels and to access new global markets.

The company is already the natural partner for Australia’s online businesses because of the reach of its network throughout the country, its international links, and its range of eCommerce products and services.

“It is exciting for us to be part of Pause Fest,” says Dirk van Lammeren, General Manager of Small Business for Australia Post.

“You might argue, what is Australia Post doing at a technology and startup related festival? We have been involved in the business space for a very long time across multiple areas, so we feel comfortable in this space. Now we are putting a lot more focus on our eCommerce strategy, connecting people and helping them buy and sell online as well as transact successfully in the digital world.”

Hosting the Pause Fest Startup Expo on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 February in the Atrium at Fed Square, Australia Post will also be offering startups the chance to pitch an idea to go into the running to win one of two $5000 business starter grants or runner-up prizes of one-on-one mentoring sessions. This event can be followed using the hashtag #AusPostTweetFund.

As part of the expo, Australia Post will also share some of the technological and logistical innovations that are being rolled out or trialled across the small business space.


“What we are trying to do is help small businesses that want to start up and have a go,” says van Lammeren. “These people are put into a very competitive environment straight away with big brands and established companies. What we are trying to do is help them grow fast and act fast as a big business.”

Australia Post does this by assisting these startups and small businesses get access to services that would usually be reserved for bigger business – such as access to ‘click and collect’ which gives new businesses access to compelling distribution services like same day or next day services for their customers. Australia Post also assists them with insights that they have access to as a result of trading with virtually everyone across Australia; small businesses and startups can use that knowledge and data to create more targeted business campaigns in the same way a large business or corporate would do.

“We’re looking at launching a space where startups and small businesses can co-work, but where we also support them with startup advice, IT support, and mentoring, not only for Australia Post services but in general. We’ll be working with partners to really build a home for small businesses who want to get away from the kitchen table or their garage and give it a serious shot in a more business-like environment,” says van Lammeren.

The organisation’s partnership with Pause Fest is part of its commitment to supporting small business and accelerating eCommerce innovation across Australia.

“I think they do an outstanding job, it’s really a festival with a lot of buzz,” says van Lammeren. “I’m looking forward to the fact that not a lot of people expect Australia Post to be there, and am excited that they will hear us and see how we support the small business and startup ecosystem. I think they’ll all be surprised.”
