Publicity With Just A Click Of A Mouse

Women are natural multi-taskers and take on a variety of roles. This woman not only a successful public relations professional, a journalist, she is also a mother. But that’s not including the role of doctor, ghost buster, teacher, cleaner, chauffeur, chef, that many mothers like her, play for the rest their mothering lives.

Johanna Baker-Dowdell, founder of Strawberry Communications, carefully crafts public relation strategies, generating great publicity, for small and medium business owners run by mums.

What makes Strawberry Communications differ from your typical PR company, is this agency is run from home and is very successful.

Johanna worked as a journalist for more than 16 years and continues to do so while running her in-house public relations agency. With a client base of 20 and counting, this business savvy mum helps other mumpreneurs get their ventures out there with just a click of a mouse.

Johanna explains social media has been a vital component in her work and a must have ingredient that is part of her PR strategy. “In terms of marketing, social media is on the top of my business plan” Johanna says.

The 36 year-old claims the main thing when working with small and medium businesses, mumpreneurs and new clients, is she knows what strategies will work for them as she has that business savoir faire.

With an endless list of key contacts within the media industry, she provides the latest opportunities for mums who are trying to make it big in the business world.

Johanna decided to take the risk on running the business from home after having her first child, but she didn’t think, at first, she could juggle motherhood and a business at the same time.

“I thought about it several times and how it may look professional or be easier for me to separate work from home but I didn’t know if a home based business would be successful,” she admits. “But I’ve always come back to home as it gives me flexibility with the kids” she added.

It was a risk she was happy she made as Strawberry Communications grew by word of mouth, generating more income than she previously made. “I work harder than I ever did too,” she laughs.

Strawberry Communications cost her just over $1200 from the website design, logo creation to registering her business name. For Johanna, it was money well spent because in no time, she made that and more.

As her business grew, so did the need for extra hands of help. Johanna decided to hire a virtual assistant and a virtual bookkeeper. Both assistants also work from home.

“It got to a point where I really needed assistance” she says. I handed key duties, which they handle and help me keep track of things. “There are things that others are just better at than I am,” she added.

Strawberry Communications once held the position as Australia’s top ten PR twitters on Ross Dawson’s List of the top 100 Twitter influencers in Australia. Ross Dawson is a globally recognized entrepreneur and author of Amazon.com’s bestselling book Developing Knowledge-BasedClient Relationship.

Her agency has been finalists at the 2010 Home Based Business Awards, Central Coast Business Achiever Awards in 2009 & was nominated at last year’s Telstra Business Women’s Awards ceremony.
